Synopsis:
Racquel (HARRIET MORAN) finds herself in a dark, deserted building and goes
in search of a girl in distress.
Meanwhile, a man wearing a pig mask wields a
meat cleaver behind a door. But which one? And who can save the day?
The Special Effect is a dark, psychological thriller and bittersweet comedy which twists through several genres to explore what it may be like to live in a dream-like state.

Background:
When Scene #9 was complete, I was ready for a different type of story, something on a larger scale that would take me somewhere new as both Director and Actor. When the script was complete I was without a Producer and realised that
I had enough on my plate and so did not take the role that I'd written for myself. This was a necessary
decision and I don't regret it.
One day in early 2006, whilst laid up after a rather painful operation (I won't go into details), I watched Batman Begins and The Fantastic Four and considered, other than someone with actual super powers, who would think they could be a super hero? My conclusion was: someone who was out of touch with reality, possibly with emotional issues but who could influence those around them who were in a similar position. The story grew from there.
This concept also gave me the excuse to include something I wanted to cover: a fight sequence that harked back to the days of great martial arts films such as Enter The Dragon - using the skills of the performers to drive the pace rather than unrealistic "wirework" fights or compensating with obscure camera angles and snazzy editing.
The cast, crew and post-production team on The Special Effect have been brilliant and patient. The shoot was demanding, busy & extremely tight for time and post-production had financial limitations that prevented it from being a quick process. However, I and the cast and crew are very happy with the end result and look forward to progressing to the next films soon!
